A study finds that “morning people” are less likely to develop breast cancer than those who don’t consider themselves early risers. All the participants in the study  were women.

Of the 180,000 women surveyed, the researchers found that the women who were “morning people” were 40-48% less likely to develop breast cancer. Is this a placebo effect of being a morning dove?

Research has long told us that sleep is good. So why now are we hearing about this cancer link? There has been whispers of the link but now we can verify that it’s true. BMI, alcohol consumption, and smoking are all significant risk factors influencing cancer risk but sleep may play an influential role, too.

Too much sleep is linked to chronic inflammation and insulin resistance.  Both of these conditions are linked to tumor growth. Too little sleep is linked to lack of focus, poor judgement, and impaired immunity.

A study published in 2013 found an association between long sleep duration and colorectabl cancer. It also found that the link could be related to a hormonal disruption, giving rise to cancer.

So I guess it’s true: early to bed, early to rise, makes a person healthy, wealthy, and wise. If need be, consult WebMD to see if you’re getting enough sleep.
