When it comes to breast cancer, screening is essential. As it stands, some states send letters to patients, without the courtesy of verbal communication to explain the results. The verbiage in the New Jersey letter is somewhat confusing as to the lay person and almost requires a PhD to comprehend what it means. In fact, the letter reads as though it’s a template that could apply to a person with cancer or a person with completely normal results. Alabama’s letter is much clearer and easy to read. When it comes to my health, speak to me like a seventh grader. I need to understand what you need me to hear. New Jersey, stop the ‘higher than thou” letters and treat your neighbors with compassion. Take a page from Alabama’s letter of breast density!
